Are you new to ballet? Have you been dancing for a while now but wonder how to improve your technique? We’ve put together a list of three things every dancer can do that will help improve ballet technique:
- Stretch Often. Flexibility is so important in the life of a dancer, especially when it comes to ballet technique. Extension is something that many dancers are working on, and one way to improve your extension is to stretch. Stretching properly and frequently will also help to prevent injuries and increase your range of motion. Don’t just rely on the stretching time given during class; schedule a time each night or in the morning for an additional stretching session at home. Always make sure that your muscles are warmed up before you stretch to avoid injury. Do some jumping jacks or go on a quick run before you try to increase your flexibility. One last tip: hold each stretch for a good amount of time, then try going a bit further into the stretch before moving on. This will help to increase flexibility instead of keeping you where you currently are.
- Practice, Practice, Practice. One surefire way to improve your technique is to practice the steps you learn outside of class. Practice whenever you can and wherever you can. Class time is limited, and you don’t always have the time to perfect your technique, especially when you are learning new things. Practicing after class will help you be ahead of your own learning curve when you go back the next time.
- Give 100% Every Time. During class, take advantage of the studio and the teacher being there. Put forth your best effort every time, so you can truly make improvements. Don’t give in to the temptation to do a combination “half-way” because you are tired. Channel your energy, and your body will give you results.
