Why Do Ballet Dancers Wear A Tutu?
When you sign your child up for ballet lessons, you may wonder why they have to wear such a specific costume. Most ballet dancers are known for dancing on their toes, requiring special footwear – but what about the tutu and leotard?
Part of what makes ballet dancing so interesting is that it is rooted in the court dances of the early renaissance. Luxurious ballet costumes were created to enhance the performances of court dancers to please the king and those in attendance during court entertainment. Costumes created specifically for ballet dancers are dated back as far as the 1500s and are noted for their two types of tutus: one that falls to the calf or ankle, and the other that juts out at the hip.
In addition, female ballerinas typically wear the traditional pointe shoe that we recognize today, but male ballerinas often wear flexible leather shoes that are ideal for jumping and movement. Male ballerinas also traditionally wear less flamboyant costumes but are rather outfitted in neutral tones.
The history of the tutu is interesting, and there have been modifications from the renaissance-style ballerina dress to more modern choices today. For example, tutus are now primarily situated at the waist rather than the hip to allow for ease of movement, and it has fallen out of style to wear ankle-length garb for the same reasons.
What is still apparent, however, is that ballet dancing still emphasizes the beautiful physique of the dancers and is a unique form of expression that many people enjoy today.
