Competitive dance is a great component of the dance world. Many dance companies offer their students the opportunity to compete in a variety of competitions to learn valuable life skills and dance training. If you have thought of getting your child involved in competitive dance, here are some important things to understand about the sport:

We are happy to offer our competitive dancers great opportunities to succeed in dance by gaining technical knowledge and experience

  • There are several different categories in each competition. Dance style is a key component of competition, and choices range from contemporary, jazz, lyrical, hip-hop, and more. These are typical dance categories you will see at a competition, but there may be others depending on the location.
  • Many competitive teams also have various sizes of groups competing in each style. Solos, duets, trios, and group numbers are common categories in competitive dance, and depending on the competition and dance team you are a part of, your child may get great experience in each dance setting.
  • Competitive dance is also generally split up into categories by age, or occasionally experience. This allows competitors to be judged according to skill level, and your child may also have the opportunity to work with judges or receive feedback on what they did well and ways to improve their dancing.
